FILLERBUSTER’S ELEVEN

BACKGROUND:  This started as a long-winded numbered blog.  It transformed into an organized long-winded category blog.  Now, it is a quick-hitter to ease your pain.  I lack time.  So, the preparation of the blog actually made me procrastinate from writing the thing.  Let’s see who makes the cut.  Barely edited as usual unfortunately, so please excuse any mistakes during my stream of consciousness.  I feel the need…the need for speed.  Let’s turn and burn.

SETTING: This blog was started on Sunday night while my wife watched her murder shows, mostly written on Monday during The Voice and Shark Tank “compromise shows,” and finished, added to, edited, and released on Tuesday night after work.  Enjoy.

  1. EVERGREEN: The New World. Memorial Day is upon us and that means holiday BBQ’s, pools, and trips.  Pools lift their covers, we see family and friends, and good times are had by all.  No, it doesn’t mean any of those things right now, of course.  Shame.  And we know the effect on the sports world.  Players will be coming back with less offseason and might be injured more quickly.  Play might be sloppier overall and be harder on the eyes.  Parents will need to explain to their little ones why athletes won’t stop and sign autographs, and that is WHEN fans are allowed to attend an event.  Home field advantage will be a distant memory aside from familiarity of the venue’s locker room, ball boys’ names, and old timer ticket checkers.  But, UFC 249 really showed me something on the positive side of things.  It is still SPORTS.  We heard the breathing, the strikes, and the corner directions.  The athletes were still elite in the octagon.  The sounds were a different kind of cool.  But, there was no crowd noise, which means you generated your own excitement.  But, the bottom line is this.  Memorial Day has much less pools and grills in 2020, but it still is a holiday where people are safe in small groups.  Sports might be tainted by lack of noise, but it is still sports where people are safe and elite athletes show their years of hard work.  We have to keep in mind the bigger picture.  And the people who complained about no crowd noise at UFC 249 really are treating the glass as half empty.  I hate those people and feel bad for those people.  Let’s cherish what we get when we get it.  Or, as Bill Murray once said famously…”baby steps.”  Baby steps to the elevator and to fan-less events, and then social distanced events, to maybe normalcy down the road.
  2. EVERGREEN 2:  COVID.  OK.  So I am not totally cutting this section, but it IS much more streamlined.  My random notes.  The stories about people wiping their face, nose, and whatever on people saddens me as much as the protests.  Listen, no one knows how this will turn out.  Saddens me to hear about security guards at McDonald’s being shot and killed telling people to wear masks in a drive-thru.  But, be noble during the process, and stop saying the government is being socialist.  Stop pushing park rangers into lakes when they are doing their jobs.  Stop protesting.  We are going to learn more about animals or labs that started this, how this thing existed in 2019, and other breakthroughs.  Deal with them as an intelligent individual.  Trump talked about ending the task force on Memorial Day, but please tell me this is extended, as turning my TV onto him try to talk us through the health specifics each afternoon literally is funnier than most Seinfelds, and that is the pantheon.  The guy didn’t wear a mask when visiting a mask manufacturer.  Some states have beach problems with spacing.  Colorado has hiking trail problems.  You end up zigzagging all over the place dodging people.  Blood thinners are now a thing.  Here are the ten “truths” apparently we should know about.  https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/06/health/cdc-coronavirus-truths-trnd/index.html  The howls have subsided substantially in Denver, as time has worn us all down.  People in Clearwater, FL are protesting the GYMS being closed.  The GYMS.  We are losing our mind as a society.  In Spain, you can now make a beach “reservation” where you can get a block of sand that is social distanced from your next store neighbor.  Man, this new normal is going to suck.
  3. NFL:  When I read about Marshawn Lynch possibly returning to the Seahawks, I look at his festive nature and solid performance in Westworld, and think that him and Gronk will be just fine post-football, whenever they do stop pump faking us. For now, they will straddle the fences.  The NFL schedule has been released and you can see that they gave themselves flexibility to lose the first 4 or so games.  The Steelers play the Eagles, the Broncos, and Cowboys, so all sorts of hometown, present town, and historical fun on my docket.  First MNF game and the late Thanksgiving Day game (Ravens) add more intrigue.  Aside from me rooting again against Le’Veon Bell for the rest of history, I guess I hope that Frank Gore does good things on the Jets regardless.  The ageless RB wonder, he is.  I agree with Tomlin.  If we are doing this practice facility protocol thing, everyone should start at the same time.  I feel like the Earl Thomas story was leaked and on the wire, and then just disappeared.  I am surprised that in a time where the sports world is desperate for stories, that this one gets a free pass.  It seems to be trendy to announce your future jobs in the NFL.  Drew Brees will be an analyst and Philip Rivers…is going to be a high school football coach.  The Rivers thing is interesting.  There is a chance he would coach his sixth-grade son at some point, but basically the desire is to A) do it a year early to generate interest for kids playing there B) be able to implement HIS offensive philosophy to kids and C) follow in his dad’s footsteps of being a high school coach.  Being out health wise until after the start of the season sure won’t help Joe Flacco’s unemployed situation.  His resume is basically a few game run to the Super Bowl, and most recently leading his team to a losing record.  What do you get when you make the Pro Bowl three straight times?  If you are Larry Watford, it means you get cut apparently (Saints).  Surprised me.
  4. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh wants more draft flexibility.  The main point he makes is that if a player doesn’t get drafted, they should be able to go back to school.  Totally agree.  Don’t punish the kids for not being selected.  It WILL be a slippery slope though, as more kids will try the draft, knowing there aren’t negative ramifications.  But, it is the right thing for kids who might be getting bad info.  Tua’s name had various headlines this week.  His brother will leave Bama and enter the transfer portal, which is surprising.  And Tua himself bought his mom an Escalade for Mother’s Day.  And he signed his contract with the Dolphins also.  Not sure if the contract or Escalade happened first, but pretty sure he won’t need a payment plan on that vehicle.
  5. COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Olivier Sarr chose Kentucky after announcing he will leave Wake, so one blue blood got stronger.  He fits PERFECTLY into the modest gap inside in their lineup that exists for the Wildcats.  Meanwhile, two other blue bloods are having some problems you should pay attention to.  KU’s violations are apparently “egregious,” and Zion Williamson is being persuaded to admit some wrong doings.  KU appears to be getting some type of penalty for one of these things.  I will be surprised if they get Duke for anything that Coach K. knows about, and they probably won’t at all.  But, maybe hold the phone on those constant Zion sponsorships.  He might have the Reggie Bush disease here shortly.
  6. NBA: The Last Dance.  Remember, I am a week behind, as I watch the weekend episodes during the week.  And, it still is a good documentary overall, I think.  Again, to restate what I said last week.  It is epic only for those who didn’t live through it, but just a refresher for us older basketball junkies who were fans during his career.  Notes from 5 & 6.  I knew MJ wore the Air Jordan 1’s in that game at MSG, but didn’t know his feet were bleeding because of them.  I found it VERY interesting the inside cameras with the Dream Team practices.  I think I had seen them before, but not sure I knew the exact dialogue and trash talking before and after them.  I don’t think I knew anything about the Toni Kukoc/ Olympics issue.  Kind of nice to fit all of the pieces together.  The Seinfeld appearance was done effectively, and it was kind of cool to see the other celebrities flocking to the MJ show back in the day.  Lt. Dan was on camera buying tickets just like us normal people.  We know the NBA was different, and maybe even “tougher” back then.  Interesting to hear Steve Kerr talk about scuffles in practice.  I didn’t realize the balancing MJ did with the media and terminally ill daily, but I guess it just makes sense.  Lot to balance.  So, did Horace Grant start carrying around snacks and meals in his bags since MJ sometimes wouldn’t allow him to eat?  Horace should have done granola bar commercials.  “When Michael doesn’t allow me to eat, this product sees me through the night.”  I know the focus is on the court for the most part, but have they mentioned MJ’s wife more than like 3 times this entire series?  Maybe they will.  I know this past weekend’s episodes touched on the baseball exit, but interesting that they never mention the sport until now.  I forgot how many cigars he smoked all the TIME.  It still really irritates me that they do two episodes every week.  I know we need more shows right now, but I could have been satisfied with one a week. Would we have been able to handle two GOT’s each week?  No.  Too much of a good thing.  I know we don’t have water coolers to discuss these over, but allow us more breathing, please.  I am not saying I go as far as this writer, but I hear him loud and clear.  He is not being brainwashed either on the show.  https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2020/05/11/last-night-pushes-false-michael-jordan-narrative  Fun article, since The Last Dance talks about the shoe sponsorship a lot, that shows the UGLIEST sneaks ever.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29104388/ranking-bottom-10-sneakers-nba-history  Man, can you IMAGINE being the Raptors, and having to possibly play against a #7 seed with a Kevin Durant addition because of the COVID delay and if they just umped right into the playoffs as is?  That would just suck.
  7. MLB: I let myself down last week.  I knew Game 4 of the Yanks-Red Sox from 2004 was being replayed, but I didn’t turn it on.  Sad.  I have a harder time turning on replays of one particular game in a long series, rather than a winner take all title game being replayed.  Of all the people in the Big Leagues to lobby for playing in the Olympics, you would think that it wouldn’t be Bryce Harper, who voiced that this week.  Don’t fire your marketing person, Bryce.  Nice fake script, and they are smart.  Well played, and your personality definitely needs that material.  MLB shortened its draft from 40 rounds to 5 rounds.  No matter what you think of a draft having 40 rounds, reducing it to 5 sounds…like a lot.  If you really don’t need rounds 6 through 40, maybe you should think about giving them up.  There are days when I wish I would have stayed with the whole baseball card hobby.  The day this weekend when I read about the Shoeless Joe Jackson 1910 card selling it for $492k…was one of those days.  Sounds like the plan to start playing is July.  Let’s play ball.  Baseball has helped out plenty of national debacles in the past, and this will be another one.  Every modified plan will have flaws and weaknesses, and I might not like the extra innings rule initially, but 82 games sounds fine and let’s do this.  The Nationals probably should NOT start out 19-31 in the shortened season though before turning it on.
  8. MISCELLANEOUS:  I am not saying that I am the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I really struggled in figuring out how to buy the Ferguson-Gaethje fight.  I didn’t find it very obvious in a day and age where things are being pushed down my throat.  I figured it out.  Ferguson showed how tough he is by not going down until after more than 25 “that was probably the one” strikes, Ferguson went out like a champion and WILL get another shot at someone.  Gaethje proved he is deserving of this stage, and the “value bet” won (yay me).  As I mentioned in the opening evergreen section, it was such an interesting experience overall.  Everything was so quiet.  You could hear the fighters breathe, hit, and get hit, and corners yelling out instructions.  Glad we tuned in.  Nadal says to scrap this season and just start in 2021.  I would agree with most Nadal things, but I don’t on this one.  Tennis is one of the sports they CAN pull off.  Even the players can stay apart.  The ball people are already separated.  Make the players change sides on opposite sides.  Bowling and boxing and golf.  You all are on deck.  I enjoyed the UFC bet, but no way I am reaching into betting on baseball in Taiwan or Korea.  Here is an article on COVID’s effect on betting overall.  Interesting stuff.  https://www.si.com/gambling/2020/05/07/how-covid-pandemic-changed-sports-gambling-present-future  Enjoy The Last Dance, and know that ESPN has moved up three more documentaries, in case you are curious what is on deck.  One will be on Bruce Lee, one is on Lance Armstrong, and the last is on the Sosa-McGwire home run race.  All sound interesting, especially the Bruce Lee one.  Tiger vs. Phil will be on May 24th, and I think that a bet will be the ONLY reason I care about that event.   Hopefully, they don’t blow their three hour script in the first 5 minutes like last time.  Or maybe Peyton and Brady can pick up the slack.  Imagine being the Buffer family.  You literally are millionaires and are almost mandatory for any sporting event because you said a few phrases in a really cool way back in the day.  Amazing.  I am very jealous.  Don’t let Conor McGregor be in quarantine too long.  Dude EXPLODED on Gaethje on Twitter this week.  Very angry stuff for little reason with a mention of a tooth necklace. Whoa.
  9. THIS AND THAT: You can make Disney reservations for July now.  I don’t have kids, so maybe that changes things, but that is the LAST place I want to be the guinea pig at post-COVID.  Glad Linds and I just went in the last couple of years.  SNL did another great attempt at a virtual show.  Well, when Baldwin does Trump for any sketch, then it will be a winner typically.  Martin Short was also a winner in my book.  Accidental advertisement during a shortage.  Wendy’s was the only fast food restaurant of the big boys to be affected by a beef shortage, as they are the only one that serves us FRESH meat.  They might have run out of meat, but it is very noted that you aren’t trying to sell us bad info on the “freshness.”  In case you didn’t hear, Nicolas Cage will get the nod to play Joe Exotic in the Tiger King movie to be done.  Nice to hear Cage’s name again.  This English dude is going to run out of real estate.  Some guy in the UK is getting a new tattoo every single day of lockdown.   In the ongoing Mount Rushmore thing I seem to be doing as a hobby, my Mount Rushmore of actresses (favorite, not necessarily quality) ended up being Annette Bening, Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Lawrence, and Charlize Theron.  Did anyone else have a colleague drop this line on Cinco de Mayo in conversation like they thought of it on their own?  I did.  By the person I expected to drop that line.  “Cinco de Mayo falls on a Taco Tuesday in the middle of a pandemic named after a Mexican beer.”  Ugghhh.  Seinfeld released 23 Hours To Kill on Netflix.  I learned that the show he did for Linds and I at Caesars 2-3 years ago has a lot of identical material, but the hour was pretty solid overall.  The funniest new bit was on marriage, he did my favorite bit on “it is what it is” and “business is business” (if you watch it, you will stop saying those phrases immediately), and had a new bit comparing a child to a baby alligator.  Basically, very cute when young, until it is time to get rid of it outside of the house, when it might eat something.  The second episode of Billions was as solid as the first, and it continues its brilliance.  They successfully started a Dexter theme, played Cherry Pie, brought up Chris Rock, and very quickly laid out a KILLER Usual Suspects quote…all in one episode.  Westworld almost got me back to knowing what was going on, but then lost me again in the finale.  They couldn’t tie up the confusion as smoothly as past seasons.  My notes.  I thought Marshawn Lynch did a really good job.  The ending was very much like Fight Club in a good way, and the Pink Floyd song at the end worked out perfectly lyrics and mood wise.  Free will is covered throughout the season in many confusing ways, and I ended up more confused.  They really used that same bridge a LOT of times in the finale.   Interesting that they had characters wearing masks when it was filmed way before COVID.  Someone tell Maeve that her daughter is a freaking program.  The Bernard key secret was not very well delivered.  That should have been a mic drop.  Are we going to space next season?  Seems logical and a good place to have more confusing adventures.  I think it was definitely in the cards that William would lose to a robot version of himself.   Caleb reminds me of John Connor.  I am not totally buying that Delores is fully dead.  Moving on.  The Voice continues its virtual competition, and I am still rooting for Thunderstorm (because he was on Jack Johnson’s special a week or two before) and that dude with eight kids.  Tim, I think.  The church guy.  Or the chick from St. John because that place rocks and her voice is pretty cool.  We are wondering a little more about possible lip syncing for some people.  Cool GOT reference when doing a serious political article on Trump.  Just read the beginning.  https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/05/politics/lincoln-project-ad-donald-trump/index.html   Lions.  Sheep.  Awesome.  El Camino on 32nd has improved their ordering method, and love some of the food there.  Plus, quarts of margs for a good price.  I love how Elon Musk and his wife name their child something weird, but then can’t publicly decide on a pronunciation.  Tom Cruise will be working on a movie FILMED on the International Space Station.  That should be fun.  I learned that Zoom has breakout rooms last week and that is cool functionality.  So, they now have a show where we watch celebrities watch TV shows?  Beginning of the end, folks.  So, if you are a gamer during this, and were already allotting time in your normal life to play hours of video games, then this must a dream, correct?  So, a five year old got busted for trying to drive west to buy a Lamborghini, and then still got to ride in one?  That kid really learned a lesson there.  They just created a monster.  Adele is suddenly skinny, and suddenly she irritates me a lot less oddly.  Yes, I am a person VERY scared of these murder hornets.  Yes, I will probably move if they come to Colorado.  But, seeing videos like this really uplift me.  This would be a Praying Mantis eating one of those bad boys.  https://twitter.com/NaturelsMetal/status/1258249812106973184  And here is a list of people, shows, etc.  who properly predicted the future.  https://www.buzzfeed.com/andyneuenschwander/17-people-who-predicted-2020  We are finding out that velociraptors did NOT hunt in packs.  So, not only did Jurassic Park make them way too big but we knew that going in, but now we have eliminated half of the plot in the movies as far as their hunting strategy.  You can order ice cream online from Sweet Cow and why wouldn’t you want to do that?   Park Burger has really good burgers as I remember and they held up during eating, but I forgot about the ridiculous fries with all of the “stuff” on them.  Magical.  Bar Dough is one of my favorite places, and although delivery is cool, will be one of the first places I go back TO when this quarantine thing lifts.  So, that Roy guy not only got bit by a tiger and almost died, but then also actually died by COVID.  Those are some odd injuries/ sicknesses just chasing after you.  Well, I guess he WAS working with live tigers, so he walked into that one.  The Queen guitarist injured his butt while gardening.  Didn’t you make enough money to pay someone to do your garden?  Well, THIS explains a lot.  https://entertainment.theonion.com/cia-admits-role-in-1985-coup-to-oust-david-lee-roth-1819577255  And this is a proud title to own. Seriously. https://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/unlucky-lizard-takes-the-record-for-largest-pooptobody-ratio/  Sad to see Little Richard die, but he got a lot of years out of life.  When one of your nicknames is “The Architect of Rock and Roll,” you definitely made an imprint on the world.  I learned in an animal show that sea lions eat seals and I did not know that.  Just assumed they were some sort of family.  Chris Toler covered Jack Johnson this week in his stream, and in my household, that is the definition of the Best of Both Worlds…unless Jack Johnson covers Chris Toler I guess.  The movie Diehard With A Vengeance is not the best movie ever, but I forgot how funny the dialogue was between Willis and Jackson.  Wendell’s on Tennyson officially closed for good, and since I have talked about that place constantly in this blog, I hope you listened at least once and got a meal there.  Shame.  Speaking of Tennyson, Revelry is even doing dinner now to help cover costs, but we noticed on Sunday that they really need another phone line, as many people couldn’t even contact them.  Il Porcellino Salumi has a breakfast BLT that is amazing for pickup.  If anyone needs a pure bred Golden Doodle, I know the person (Lindsey’s mom).  She has about 15 puppies from two litters in her house as we speak.  We went up there to celebrate Mother’s Day.  Highland Tap & Burger has the messiest burgers, but damn they are good.  There are a lot of streams out there.  We found out the recent Disney one (Linds tuned in for Ben Platt) DEFINITELY was only for kids.  We did Chris Toler, Rob Meagher, and a little of Widespread Panic.  We watched the movie Spenser Confidential, and it was Mark Wahlberg and we hadn’t even HEARD of it.  COVID has changed advertising too.  And, we probably only enjoyed it because it had Mark Wahlberg in it.  Probably wouldn’t have broken any records in the theater, but sure was a fun movie.  Want streams?  Here is something CNN is providing to help get us through and be in the know.  https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/11/entertainment/livestreams-schedule-quarantine-trnd/index.html  Jerry Stiller died at 92 years young.  He had other moments in his career, but with me being a Seinfeld addict, I will remember him for that the most.  Here is an article about some of his best Seinfeld moments.  https://www.theringer.com/tv/2020/5/11/21254590/jerry-stiller-dead-seinfeld-frank-costanza-best-moments  And serious, what the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?  Happy trails, Jerry.  You will be missed.
  10. THE FILLERBUSTER: First of all, Happy Mother’s Day  (only late in the blog-yes, I called and sent a card) to my mom.  She raised me in a way that gave me the best chance to succeed and be the best person I could be.  I couldn’t have asked for more in my upbringing.  Thanks, Mom.  You are the best! We are on episode 6 of season 2 of The Wire, and now the seasons have been RANKED, and I know I am watching the worst one until I hit the best one next, it all helps me (and my wife more importantly) keep moving on it.  Because otherwise, I would be just waiting for it to get really GOOD, which it hasn’t as of yet.  Just decent…and building.  We find ourselves watching a lot more nature shows as this life modification drags on.  I was literally entranced by a part on cheetahs the other day.  I would like to report that during this quarantine, I STILL have not successfully moved the remote control like a Jedi Knight when it is on the other side of the couch…but I will keep trying dammit.  Lindsey’s mom and dad have horseshoe pits.  Whenever I go up, I clean them up and play.  The talent my Dad passed down to me still shows flashes on many throws.  Definitely miss growing up playing with him every day.  We made our first store trip in two months and it actually DID make me nervous.  I hadn’t been around people in a while.  But, Linds needed some plants from Home Depot and we ventured out.  We are staying home for a while again now.  My work continues to handle COVID like a champ and with class.  I had a work call where fish wheelchairs was actually a conversation topic.  We also had a work phone call where I found out a colleague superglued his thumb nail after a nail went through it.  And I thought ducktaping my big toe nail back on in the day (whole OTHER story) was a bad idea.  Nice though, that messaging visitors and employees will become MORE important as things open back up, which means my work’s product will be even MORE needed as the upswing occurs.  Trying to watch a jet flyover and planning it is hard.  Those jets are fast, and you just trust the schedule and stare at the sky like an idiot.  I showed you the supply of hot sauce we had at the beginning of the quarantine.  You would be horrified at the amount we have left of those 25 bottles. Down to lower single digits.  We like hot sauce slightly.  We got new lamps.  Plugs and tapping for levels.  Classy.  We got some new sheets and blankets for the guest room.  It now looks like a guest room, as opposed to a frat boy who is crashing with us.  Classy.    Porch time has been great as the weather gets better.  I can lose lots of card and board games to my wife.  So, are bike rides.  I think we will miss 4pm Saturdays with Chris Toler and Rob Meagher streaming when normalcy comes back.  In a way.  Being around people will be better of course.  Our sound machine bottomed out, and I thought I knew how reliant I was on white noise while sleeping, but definitely magnified it as the phones just won’t do.  I suddenly have to drink out of a filter per the water company, and that is not going to be an easy adjustment.  Lead.  You suck.  I live in Colorado, where the water should just flow from the mountains.  I don’t want to deal with a water filter.  Travel note.  I think these animal shows have made the decision for us.  Our next big trip will be a safari.  It will help us be socially distant too.  Just makes sense.  Africa here we come…eventually.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed.  Remember two things.  First, feed yourself, feed your family, but always, always remember to…feed the wolf.  Second,  if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.  Will I blog again?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.  As one shepherd said to the other shepherd, let’s get the flock out of here.
