GAME NIGHT

The Cast 03/04/2018

(*****all old school one sentence only style casts still being kept under the This And That drop down on my website)

(*****I am actually putting most of my weekly college basketball notes over on that drop down on purpose this week because I know that basketball overload is coming for you very, very soon)

SIDE NOTE:

I typically organize a little what I am about to write in my new focused approach.  No time this week.  Let’s just kind of WRITE.  ALSO, this is probably the last focused blog on anything NON-March Madness related.  It takes over my mind, and therefore will take over my blog.

SHAQUEM GRIFFIN:

Do you ever feel lazy?

20 reps on the 225 bench press and a 4.38 40 run SHOULD make us feel lazy, right?

Oh, did I mention that it was by a college player with ONE hand?

Shaquem Griffin is AMAZING, people.  What he did in college was AMAZING.  What he is doing at the combine IS amazing.  The kid has a motor that won’t stop.  And to think he has done what he is doing his whole LIFE makes us all feel lazy.

His bench press was better than some lineman.  His run was the fastest by any LB in a decade.  I don’t know about you and can’t speak for you, but I will be a closet fan of whatever team HE ends up on.

ROCKETS:

The Rockets have won 15 straight.  They just beat the Celtics.  They are pretty much TOYING with the entire NBA.  And, this is EXACTLY what the NBA needed.  Instead of playing this whole regular season and then hoping someone could topple the Warriors, the NBA NEEDS a team to have a better record than them.  They need the masses to think there is hope against the evil empire.  Oh, and then they can face whoever in the East in the Finals.  Whatever.  They have all the elements you need to beat the Warriors if the ball bounces the right way a couple of times in a seven game series.  Getting home court advantage is a MUST for them, for the NBA, and for us fans.

Oh, and the Harden crossover.  Insult to injury?  Maybe.  Cool as hell?  Yup.  Input on the actual move?  https://www.sbnation.com/2018/3/1/17066550/james-harden-wesley-johnson-crossover-stare-video-highlights-disrespectful-cold-blooded

UNC-DUKE:

The game served its purpose in that the team behind most of the game DID make a comeback and made it a watchable, exciting game.  The weird thing?  UNC pretty much rolled over in the last ten minutes.  So, the great comeback by Duke…just kept going and going.  UNC and Duke will still be part of the Final Four conversation no matter the outcome.  Both are too talented and getting healthy and smarter at the right time.  Both are very, very good.  Besides my natural hatred of Grayson Allen, I just don’t him winning another one while he is there.  UNC?  Go right ahead.  Nothing that provokes my hatred as long as they don’t have to go through UVA to do so.

COUSINS:

The Finalists are…the Jets, Broncos, Cardinals, and Vikings.

Pretty simple, man.

  • If you like the big city and that outweighs you winning anything, go to the Jets.
  • If you want the karma of the last QB who tagged on in Denver won a Super Bowl and realize the secret the rest of the nation does NOT know…that Denver weather is perfect, then go to the Broncos. From living here, I can tell you the fan base DOES want him pretty badly.
  • If you want a fancy stadium, a star RB, and really hot weather, go to the Cardinals.
  • If you are sure the other three guys are leaving the city in free agency so there isn’t any starting problems and want a side dish of a presently badass defense and a new cool stadium where you walk outside and it is snowing, then go to the Vikings.

I think he is either a Bronco or Cardinal.  I think the Vikings ride with Bridgewater or Keenum.

SMITH AND SMITH:

I won’t talk long on this, but SOOOOO nice to know people never change that much in a lot of cases.  At press time, my dream of OJ Simpson Car Chase II is still in play with Aldon Smith, as the guy did something else literally last night/early this morning.  And JR is throwing soup at coaches WITH an underachieving stat line to partner with the incident.  I love those guys.

GAME NIGHT:

I went to see Game Night Saturday morning, and you all know although I recognize I am TOO overly critical about all movies if they don’t fit my style, I do like to share my thoughts on movies to help you out.

First, if you want a fully positive review, just ping my wife.  She thinks Game Night was actually better than the original The Hangover.  To each their own.

Second, my take.  It was a fun movie.  I didn’t just point at my monthly MoviePass subscription as an out as it wasn’t a waste of my time.  Starting with the negative, I just simply thought it was too much going on, and that it had problems in identifying what its main goal was.  Comedy, but people are dying.  Plot twists until the end.  Jesse Plemons makes you think Matt Damon pulled a Tom Cruise-Tropic Thunder-makeup undercover thing.  Bateman is himself and as always, deadpan funny.  But, I just thought the plot was a little out of hand.  Not enough to make me mad at the movie, but I didn’t find it overall GREAT.  It was a little far fetched and choppy.  Good overall, ok?

On a positive note, I will say this.  When a certain one liner or scene rolled around that was funny, it was legendary funny.  There were a couple of parts and lines and scenes where I almost lost my s%&*.  They DID capitalize on some insanely funny moments.  The dude from New Girl is SOOOOO funny.

On a 5 star system, I would throw it 3 stars overall, 3.5 with the here and there legendary scenes.  I give it 3.5 stars and 4 if you have a lot of drinks before the movie I assume.

Seeing the dog scene in full length was ridiculous, and I will never be able to look at Denzel Washington the same.

Don’t read too much into my reviews.  Once again, I admit I am WAY too overly critical on movies.  I know this.  It was a good movie.  I just always expect more.  It wasn’t any  Princess Bride, OK?

By the way, we saw the long preview of Cock Blockers and I don’t remember a preview making me laugh that hard in a long, long time.

While over that way (Alamo Draft House), we picked up two of the hot sauces from Tap and Burger and I am telling you it is my new favorite hot sauce right now.

DARKEST HOUR:

While we are talking movies, let’s knock this out too.

The movie itself is only limited by the fact that the event actually occurred, so you know what happens.  If this movie was an original script, it would have more artistic flexibility and therefore be better.

What I WILL say is that if I am a voter for the Oscars (I am not), I am throwing everything I have in the vote box for Gary Oldman.  He MADE that movie and was perfect and then some.

COMEDIANS/ COFFEE:

Perfect show.  I thought it would be normal length, but the fact that the segments are literally 15 real time minutes is brilliant.  I watched the first one with Jim Carrey.  Very natural and organic in its funny nature.  I stopped before watching the second one, because it has Jimmy Fallon, and Lindsey likes him, so I will wait it out.

BREAKING BAD:

Yes, I FINALLY watched the first episode this weekend, as I am tired of being the one guy who is so pop culturally sound, yet missing on some obvious ones.  I am hooked.  More to come, and sorry I somehow missed this part of my life.

SOLSBURY HILL:

I hate weekend radio.  In my changing out of car CD’s, I popped in Peter Gabriel.  I LOVED listening to him in the 80’s and 90’s.  On one of his CD’s is the song that I truly believe is at the top of the list all time in Top 40 songs with the best lyrics overall.  Take a look.

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing, stretching every nerve
Had to listen, had no choice
I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Son”, he said, “grab your things, I’ve come to take you home”

To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
‘Til I thought of what I’ll say
Which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Hey”, he said, “grab your things, I’ve come to take you home”
(Hey, back home)

When illusion spin her net
I’m never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me
Today I don’t need a replacement
I’ll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom, boom, boom
“Hey”, I said, “you can keep my things, they’ve come to take me home”
