INTRO/ DISCLAIMER:

First of all, keep reading as I promise I won’t give any spoilers for the Solo movie…

Yes.  You would think this would be a MONSTER blog since we have gone the longest amount of time ever in between blogs, including my 3 week Europe cruise last year.  But, I have cut down items, picked and chosen, and have streamlined this the best I could.  Still a little old school style as my lists are still long, but still…a LITTLE streamlined.  Oh, and there was no pre-writing done-this is written start to finish right now in this time window.  And very little editing, so forgive any grammatical errors.  Plus, I better get this out before A) World Cup and the B) US Open.  I have allotted myself 2 hours for this blog, which means…I feel the need…the need for speed.

WRITING BACKGROUND:

I did just watch a preview show on the World Cup.  Very depressing since the U.S isn’t there.  But informative, and I am still a country soccer mega-fan.  Now, I am watching US Open shows, this one featuring Tiger vs. Rocco in San Diego.  I was there.  I was at the 20 yard line from that crazy approach shot and birdie putt on 18 from Tiger on the Sunday.  Let’s turn and burn.

EVERGREEN:

These unfortunately will be quicker than I prefer…

  • It is amazing to me how fast we find out things these days. But, what is really scary is that you find out news on social media usually hours before it hits the main sports sites.
  • I am firmly in the court on the anthem issue that A) Colin Kaepernick is being blackballed and should have a job with some of the rejects we have as 2nd and 3rd stringers as QB’s in the NFL and B) players should be able to do what they want on the field during the song. The Jets owner saying he will pay ALL player fines ALL season long and that they can do what they want was the good act I wanted to see from all of this…or at least a starter.
  • Get healthy, Ohtani. We, as baseball fans, NEED the Angels in the playoffs.  Think about this.  Mike Trout’s stats this season are .314, 23, 45, and .444.  That is almost as absurd as his career stats of .306, 224, 613, .412.
  • It was a Stanley Cup final of a team everyone was rooting for against a loyal long time player everyone was rooting for. It could have been magical and gone 7, but the fact they both were there in a win-win situation for fans was enough.  Ovechkin might not have a career as a MLB pitcher, but damn it was nice to see such a good player win one.  The Golden Knights’ season is not tarnished by the magic they allowed us to experience.  Awesome run by that team of cast-offs.
  • Iggy was hurt for a game or two and the Warriors STILL swept the Cavs. Too much firepower and experience (now).  When you can allow for any one of three future HOF’ers to have a bad night and still win decisively, you have a problem.  I don’t root for super teams and hated when KD went to the Bay Area, but I hope LeBron DOES link up with a few All Stars so we can have a great Finals again without a certain ending.  Go to Boston.  Let’s get this party started.  Or, go to Houston and we can just have NBA watch parties two weeks earlier in the summer.  I assume that non-look into the eyes by LeBron during the playoffs with Gilbert was the beginning of the end with his time there.  The Decision Part III.
  • I like what Mike Greenberg said today on Twitter. Wherever LeBron ends up, I hope Kawhi Leonard JOINS him.  THAT would be a great team to root for against the Evil Empire out West.
  • I also liked what Michael Wilbon said The Undefeated today. If LeBron truly wants to make non-basketball statements in the world, then go to DC as the most powerful political city with a roster that might work, cap space, and a medium that covers ALL territory.
  • Just remember, Houston getting LeBron is doable IF they can figure out a team who will take Ryan Anderson off their hands. Not only did he make $20 million this year as a bench player, but he makes MORE the next two years in his contract.    Just in case you think that winning teams don’t make bad decisions in the draft, trades, and contracts.
  • By the way, regarding the LeBron wrist injury. I agree with Doug Gottlieb on this one.  You either announce it before Game 2, or keep it under wraps for eternity.  Having him do his presser in a soft cast after the last loss was cheesy.  And this isn’t hockey.  LeBron isn’t going to get fouled any more or less than usual with the Warriors knowing he has a hurt wrist…self inflicted.  This isn’t hockey.
  • Self-inflicted. I thought that would happen playing with JR Smith WAY before this year.
  • And none of this might have happened if Chris Paul had stayed healthy. We will never know.  And injuries happen, but they ALMOST had the Warriors WITH home court advantage to boot.
  • Sorry…lost in thought on remembering how many three pointers the Rockets missed in a row in that game…
  • US Open predictions:
    • I like Rickie Fowler or Jason Day on this one. Rickie’s game is made for this course, and Jason has been quiet on the Major front for a while.  No vertigo, no problem.  Look for a cool Australian and his buddy with bright pants playing in the final group in the final round.
    • Kuchar, Scott, and Bryson are my dark horses.
  • World Cup predictions:
    • Do you realize the two greatest soccer players of our generation have NOT won the World Cup? Messi and Ronaldo have zero titles.
    • I was going to do a full breakdown but am low on time, so will just give you this. I like Germany over France in the title match.  Germany takes it.
    • Wouldn’t you just LOVE to be in Poland’s group?
    • My dark horse is Argentina to break the present generation player curse.
  • The U.S. getting the World Cup is cool. I can stop being mad at myself for not going to a World Cup yet, which was on my bucket list right after Augusta (check).  We can all go.  Hopefully, Trump doesn’t get us blown up before 2026.
  • I can’t believe that Iceland is in the World Cup and the U.S. is not. Iceland has like 350k citizens.  That is absurd.  By the way, I am NOT a fan of increasing the amount of teams in March Madness, just like I am absolutely against the ruling that the World Cup will be expanding to 48 and not 32 teams.  Don’t like it.  Of all tourneys in any sport, the World Cup is done right in qualifying and the tourney groups and advancement terms.
  • I know the answer is money, but what the hell was I thinking back in college NOT going to the World Cup last held here in the States?
  • Let’s call the magic the way it is. The French Open was the Borg Open almost.  Now, it is the Nadal Open without a doubt.  When the up and coming clay court player wins nine…NINE…games against Nadal in the final.  That is ridiculous.  Think about this.  With all of the talent in the young ranks, Federer or Nadal have won the last FIVE Slams…must be depressing to be a youngster in that sport with the assumption you would take over when they got old.
  • For you non tennis people, surfaces ARE a difference…big time. I have hit on clay and grass and hard court, and clay is like the US Open in a way that it accentuates your flaws.
  • Justify will race again, but check out this. He was bought for $500k.  His sire rights were just sold for $75 MILLION.  And get this, he will breed 250 times estimated in a year.  The dude gets the Triple Crown and his reward is to have meaningless sex with females almost daily.
  • I put bets in on the two other legs of the Triple Crown. Lindsey won on the first, and we got smoked on the second.  The third?  I was furniture shopping and told my wife we wouldn’t have time to go home, but that if I were to put something in, I would have done a trifecta box on Justify, Hofburg, and of course Gronkowski.    True story.  And my picks make sense.  Favorite, second favorite, football cool name…
  • I really wish that Trump would find a way to not be in every other SPORTS headline on the wire. You would think a guy making bad decisions and hated pretty much by most people would want a FRIEND or two in the sports communities.
  • By the way, the Eastern Conference finals in the NBA went 7 games, but did you hear what I did? In the first quarter of game SEVEN, they had their THIRTEENTH lead change of…the entire series.  Amazing how lopsided that contested series was game by game.

WEEK-FISH (one sentence per hook because of time):

  • Trump finally did a good thing in office, as he pardoned Jack Johnson
  • The Phillies’ catcher Jorge Alfaro threw a base stealer out, and the speed of his throw was EIGHTY NINE mph.
  • We probably can’t see it because we are IN the generation he is in, but I wasn’t surprised that Jeter’s rookie baseball card went for $99k.
  • Everyone can have their own opinion, but I personally am appalled that we live in this time, and a kid is still denied from playing football at Auburn because cannabis helps him not have epileptic seizures.
  • If Lonzo Ball and LiAngelo Ball both end up on the Lakers, I think my body will literally combust and stump scientists for centuries.
  • I could tell I was moving because I didn’t have any TV time, and therefore didn’t catch one single second of the National Spelling Bee.
  • I knew Delaware would give them a run, but it turns out the obvious answer of who will get sports betting going first is my home state of New Jersey.
  • One thing I haven’t read much on is the effect of sports gambling elsewhere on March Madness and Vegas, and I am sure glad I did the first and second weekend multiple times, as that might taper off over the coming years with Vegas not being the only place to stare at games with money on the line.
  • Anyone else read that Josh Freeman retired from the CFL, and say “THAT’S where that guy was for the last few years?”
  • So, I guess the elation we all felt when BOTH NBA conference series went to seven games was quickly put to bed during the Finals.
  • Venus lost in the first round, Serena bowed out later, we have age and pregnancies, and kids, and all sorts of stuff, and I hope you enjoyed what was a dominant run by two sisters, because I personally am not so sure Serena will get back that on court presence and fear producing approach again.
  • AND they lost at doubles…
  • The reason I like the ability for kids to withdraw from the draft is that I don’t have to explain to non-basketball fans who exactly Bruno Fernando is.
  • Maryland basketball player who should definitely play another year.
  • In case you care, the Bama football-LeBron tie in championships is officially…done.
  • Not a big headline, but still a little trouble in paradise, as Draymond Green is initially saying he wants a max contract, and I personally am not sure how the heck that happens with that roster.
  • Good day for Reggie Bush, who was probably chilling out on the porch listening to Ice Cube’s It Was A Good Day, as he got $12.5 million for his 2015 injury and the Rams’ handling of that injury.
  • If you are worried about U.S. basketball, just know the kids were up on Panama 43-0 after the first quarter the other day.
  • I just started humming Van Halen…go figure.
  • The story about the Minnesota kid striking out his best friend to advance in the playoffs but going to console him before doing any celebrating made my week.
  • The anniversary of the MJ flu game was this week, and THAT was a magical couple of hours, people, in case you are too young or weren’t watching.
  • You people who didn’t watch that flu game probably STILL kick yourself, right?
  • Kellen Winslow, ex-NFL tight end, was…get this…arrested for burglary while HOUSE SHOPPING.
  • Just when models were maybe getting over any dumb stereotype, the model who held up the flags for the Canadian Grand Prix showed the wrong one and ended the race a lap or two EARLY.
  • When I watched the Real Sports special on Royce White, I knew his situation already from years ago, and sympathized with him from afar about his fear of planes, but then saw him in interviews and couldn’t get past the fact that he was unlikeable, cocky for some reason, and aloof.
  • I love that Spain fired their coach days before the World Cup, and that a Spanish player cited, of all things, the AMERICAN 1989 Michigan Wolverines basketball team as an example of a good team getting a brand new coach and winning it all.
  • Nike, because of Trump sanctions, cancelled Iran’s order for soccer shoes FIVE days before the World Cup…and THAT is kind of jacked up AND another reason for the world to dislike the U.S.
  • So, Greg Hardy gets the UFC contract he was seeking for knocking out his opponent, who also happened to be an ex-NFL football player (Austen Lane)…sound like someone is missing a key part of the equation.
  • The U.S. is actually sending the most amount of fans from outside of Russia, and I don’t totally understand how that could happen, but am moderately impressed.
  • I love UVA alum Chris Long for all of the nice stuff he does on and off the football field, but him calling out hockey players on Twitter is totally incorrect and not right.
  • I remember what Jim Rome said years ago…if he could have any group of athletes in an alley fight, he would take hockey players over every single other sport…you go into a football locker room after a game and the players are icing their injuries, while a hockey locker room has teeth on the floor and blood smeared on lockers.
  • I love that when Bryan Colangelo said someone was out to get him, it was figured out that the logical culprit with Twitter access was…his wife. That is kind of funny.
  • I personally LIKED Serena’s cat suit at the French Open, and I have no problem with it because it logically makes sense for running around a tennis court. I hope Wimbledon loosens its fashion code.
  • For anyone out there thinking that baseball managers just argue to argue and shouldn’t be allowed to do it so much, the Astros manager recently argued an uncalled balk, and it ended up scoring a run in a win…so there.
  • I think the Warriors were jealous of the Capitals as the Capitals won on visitor ice and got to party in Vegas and the Warriors won on visitor court and were…in Cleveland.
  • It is better for Golden Knights fans that they didn’t win, as can you IMAGINE their expectations for the coming years if the first year they owned the Stanley Cup for a year??
  • I get you Vegas would have done much cooler things WITH the Stanley Cup though.
  • Happy trails, Dwight Clark, and it is pretty cool when you are a WR and the job is to catch a ball and your highlight forever will be known as THE catch.
  • The media doesn’t have Terrell Owens antics to find these days off the field, but he is doing his best, as turning down the invitation for the HOF ceremony was as classless as he has always been.
  • I am glad the U.S. got the World Cup bid for many, many reasons, but even more happy since it goes against idiot Hope Solo’s comments against the bid.
  • Nationals P Max Scherzer has now thrown TWO immaculate innings and that is pretty awesome stuff (9 pitches, 9 strikes).
  • I wonder what they do with all of the time gaps created by no teams wanting to go meet Mr. Trump.
  • Ryan Shazier, you are the MAN, but there is no need to play football again, bro…just be the badass you are and were get healthy.
  • OU’s Kyler Murray had a $4.7 million decision to make after he went 9th in the MLB draft while being the #1 QB at school, and it looks like OU fans will at least get ONE year out of the kid…make it a good one, bro.
  • I am sad that Edelman got busted for PED’s and suspended, because I had read so many articles on the dude that I was drinking the Kool-Aid that he was by the book and just a badass naturally.
  • Looks like Lindsey Vonn has moved on, Tiger, and to a HOCKEY player.

POP CULTURE/THE FILLERBUSTER:

Quick ones as time is flying…

  • I saw a commercial for So You Think You Can Dance and remember when oddly I was single and still somehow an addict for the first few seasons of that stupid show…or maybe that was why I was single.
  • I have advanced so far as I now like The Voice.
  • If you fought through the tough beginning part of the season, know that Westworld just got good again.
  • Also, in my constant comparison to GOT and how they are handling it, people aren’t dead unless you see them die on screen, and they are doing the 3-4 episodes of buildup and story, and then one HELL BENT episode with fireworks and big reveals.
  • I am still not sure why they speak foreign languages in some other worlds, as don’t the guest mostly speak English?
  • My new comparison is that the piano player in the beginning of the theme song, the piano is telling the keys what to do just like the owners of the park told the robots what to do, and when he takes his hands off the keys, it is the robots presently acting on more free will.
  • Still researching how to do a doggie door and not allow cats out before making a decision on the type of dog…
  • I couldn’t tell you what hit songs made him famous, but I still love the Leslie Odom insurance commercials.
  • It is true I hate Sandra Bullock in everything except for Crash (one of my top 5 movies), but if my head doesn’t explode by the Ball brothers playing together, than it will definitely blow up if I ever catch myself seeing that movie.
  • The guy, Ross, who helped me move, left such an imprint on me during our time working together that I admit to having “prep” time in organizing boxes and furniture just to prepare for his locked on approach.
  • I am the biggest fan of pizza I know, and being closer to Blue Pan pizza I have discovered is a very, very good thing.
  • During the move and our stay at Hotel Monaco downtown, I found something called TRUFFLE pizza and it was incredible.
  • I care because I used to see this band in college for $4 every week at Trax, but Dave Matthews Band is releasing a new album???
  • During the NBA Finals, I really, really enjoyed seeing those Equalizer II commercials as they were quite funny…especially Oladipo.
  • I decided during the NBA playoffs that my wife’s drinking tell is liking basketball and sitting down and watching any game that I have on and analyzing good and bad things going on.
  • Lindsey and I aren’t having kids, and I think we have decided instead we will call the cats presently in house our “kittos.”
  • I like hot foods and I like Cheetos, but I now FIRMLY stand in the court that eating the XXXXX Hot Cheetos is NOT a good idea for the next day.
  • During the move, I got to do three days of me pulling the Costanza first in, last to leave because my car stayed in the garage every day, although not as funny because I am first in anyway…the afternoon part was the funny part I suppose.
  • Actually, probably not at all funny and I just wanted to reference Seinfeld I think.
  • I learned during the move that my all 7-11 grocery store trip is pre-boiled eggs, yogurt, lunchables, bananas, and Odwalla, a chocolate milk, and a Milky Way.
  • I am amazed by the stars they pulled for it, and I get they are trying to do some Wedding Crashers-hangover chemistry heist on the viewers, but I think the movie Tag will be extremely funny for two 10 minute segments and then SUCK the rest of the way.
  • Although the business has run out of ideas, you have to admire the Purge enterprise, as making movie about the FIRST one is semi-interesting if you have a grain of salt in the interest column for any of the movies.
  • The Tonight Show skit with Blake Shelton and Jimmy getting their palms read was borderline hilarious.
  • So, the sellers didn’t as promised leave us the big screen TV or the grill (and we gave ours away on our sale for paying it forward), but left me huge piles of trash it will take weeks to get picked up, making me fully know that all of the Phish signs in the house were accurate.
  • I have decided that something needs to be done about how movers and airlines literally OWN us for pricing and availability.
  • Billy’s Inn is right down the street from new home, and its burger is officially in my top 10 Denver burgers.
  • I think I now have Humboldt, Park & Co, Highland Tap, D Bar, and now Billy’s Inn.
  • So, one of the things I never checked during the find a house process was whether Verizon had some weird blackout area in the Highlands…they do…my house.
  • In case you care, a Tennessee lawmaker now says PORN is to blame for all of the school shootings.
  • As an ex-bartender, I see some new simple contraptions behind most bars that would have made A) my life easier and B) me millions of dollars if I had invented them.
  • I feel better as a guy owning cats when baseball and Seinfeld super cool Keith Hernandez tweets regularly with cat involvement.
  • I am very excited about both the new Incredibles and Hotel Transylvania movies, and that is not sarcasm.
  • Whenever I hear that feel good song from The Showman movie last year, I wonder how it didn’t win…very high quality and catchy.
  • Speaking of songs, I still make my wife not skip the intro to both GOT and Westworld…love those tunes so much.
  • I feel like I never got to re-hate Rosanne again before it got cancelled because of those tweets.
  • Just like I feel like I never got to enjoy the house shopping process because Lindsey fell in love with a house so much.
  • I like the house…but will LOVE it if she gives me the whole, ancient, bug infested, about to be my boxing arena garage.
  • If you use The Passbook in the Denver area, just a heads up that we do too, and EASILY the best deal on the board is Range downtown, as you can get a $50 steak for free…no regulations on what you order.
  • We had a Guess Who during a meeting at work, the first clue was “has a blog” and the guy trying to answer, who sat next to me for an entire year (Dan), didn’t get me as the answer.
  • I tend to think you can’t talk to me for like 15 minutes without knowing fully I have a blog…sorry…it makes me happy.
  • Lindsey watched those house hunters shows (our last move will be to a remote beach) and the person got sent to their childhood HOME as an option, and I thought that was weird and highly unlikely.
  • My wife hasn’t voiced her pleasure yet, but as soon as the World Cup and US Open are done, it is officially non-hoops, non-football, non-hockey season.
  • Yes, I realize those two events are not any of the following, but I am talking about no every night things from here out for a couple of weeks…that is amazing in my world.
  • Yes, I will do my yardwork and moving action items EARLY in the morning this weekend, as I have to sit on the couch for about 12 hours this weekend watching golf.
  • Well, one of the mornings, probably Sunday, I will go play nine holes before the festivities.
  • I heard there is roast for Bruce Willis coming this summer, and that sounds like a lot of fun.
  • I live next to an Orange Julius supplier, Dairy Queen, and have decided this past week to start pouring my morning milk and orange juice together in the same glass to celebrate this finding.
  • Just when you think you finally have life truly figured out, something happens like the Miss America contest dropping the swimsuit part of the contest and you are totally confused again.
  • If you have never seen the Floozies or Motet or Lettuce, you are missing out, and my second time seeing all three (two in the same concert luckily) was WELL worth it once again.
  • I decided once again at one of these concerts the truth that if you wear a silly costume, it is almost mandatory that you do crazy, silly things all the time, or otherwise you look like just a weird person who decided to throw on a dumb costume for a show.
  • I have the week off from Red Rocks and then…Widespread Panic…yay.
  • We have moved to a place where there is a “cat café” on Tennyson, and it scares me in all of my jokes about my wife becoming eventually a cat lady that she really, really wants to go to the cat café.
  • During furniture shopping, we stopped by Hobby Lobby, and this being my first experience in said store, I will say I am very, very scared for myself should I ever venture in there again…magical place.
  • So, I drove by The Oriental Theater in my errands and noticed Warren G will be there June 20th, so…you know what I am doing on the evening of June 20th I guess. I must regulate.
  • The local gym scouting trip was beneficial, as pools, basketball courts, and partially completed speed bag and heavy bag rooms are within shouting distance…all my cups of tea in the gym.
  • These new wing nut commercials make me laugh harder than most people because I have a good friend who we used to oddly call Wing Nut…love that guy.
  • I learned a couple days in that I am in “Berkley” and not “The Highlands” officially, kind of like Colfax is the dividing line between Cap Hill and Uptown I guess.
  • I used to work over this way, and went to a crappy, ancient 24 Hour Fitness, and was not that happy that it had succeeded in remaining crappy and ancient.
  • I believe there are two types of people in the world: those who make their food check after tip exactly a number on the dot and do the math to get there because they like round numbers in their freaking bank account, or those people who just tip the round amount.
  • Bartenders and servers just pull the cash, people, so make it easier on them.
  • I didn’t realize how logical it would be until I bought plastic cups for the hotel room and noticed that the Solo Cups were sponsoring the Solo movie…logic.
  • During the move with my wife, my confusion is now tenfold about WHY women ask guys what color they want the curtains.
  • I just replying blue because it is my favorite color, and eventually the questions tapered off.
  • I can’t get my wife to continue to watch Billions and Westworld, but I can’t watch it without her, and she knocked out Hand Maid’s tale in like a week.
  • When Bofa Deez Nuts won in a race before the Preakness, it made me laugh because Deez Nuts was our Hoop-It-Up team name back in the day.
  • The two most amazing things about this house are that the dishwasher opens up on its OWN when drying dishes (Samsung), and the fridge door has a button to let you control whether you open the door to the back part or the shelves…both are amazing to me.
  • There is no person on this earth more excited for Top Gun 2 than me, and…it is in production NOW.
  • Denver people planning on moving, A Smart Move is my recommendation and the two people were the most polite moving people I could ever imagine…book them.
  • I had never really thought about this and rent vs. hotel pricing, but I learned that a LOT of people live in storage units…at least many more than you expect.

Solo (no spoilers):

  • I have to make this quick. Time is ticking on my allotment.
  • Star Wars, people, you may have wanted to change up things, but MOST of us LIKE the initial storyline getting told in arched, fade out letters with the theme song blasted. Just saying.
  • And you made us wait WAY too long for that damn song.
  • I felt like the love part was a little pushed on us, with no real reason why it was continuing.
  • I expected to see Han Solo have character development, but I guess having him be who he is immediately is an option too.
  • I thought you had a lot of plot twists, but sacrificing those quality of those right/wrong decision moments I think was shallow.
  • The writing played it VERY close to the vest and there were no big reveals if you ask me.
  • I haven’t Googled this, but did the whole movie go for duration without the words “jedi” or “force” being uttered?
  • This was just a good background story of Han, and there were no twists that boggled your mind.
  • The late appearance of that image of you know who was badly misplaced when the plot was resolving itself. Put it earlier.
  • Whereas the last in between Star Wars movie had the need to watch multiple times, I can’t picture myself tuning in to this one again.
  • Not near as bad as the pre-quels though, people…
  • I think Woody Harrelson should just be the same character in like 100 more movies before I die.
  • I thought the kid who played Han did a heck of a job considering we know how he turned out with Ford.
  • I thought the Glover kid was really good also, but wanted a little more of him.
  • Chewbacca was, as always, welcomed and awesome. It was a fun tale of how him and Han met.  I didn’t even mind meeting some of his people.
  • In the end, I give it a B. That is a good score with my usual bashing of movies.  Anyway, it was good, but not risky at ALL.  If it wanted to feel a little separate from the Star Wars enterprise, it did a little.  It told the story effectively, and that was exciting and OK.  Go see it once.  Not every movie can be an Empire Strikes Back, right?  That one was perfect.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed.  I have to go enter my US Open pool and place some $2 wagers on long shots.  Will I blog again?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.  Peace.
