Catch Of The Day

SETTING:

I have to get in one more blog before Lindsey returns tomorrow.  Therefore, a quick hitter.  The theme was pre-selected, and I will explain why in a bit. I feel the need…the need for speed (no, seriously-this will be lightning quick and I am giving myself 45 minutes to write and post).

Let’s turn and burn.

EVERGREEN (topics that don’t fade away):

(these will not be writing samples and much shorter, as I have to get to the last Billions episodes)

  • If I spend four hours of my Sunday watching a football game with my team and their rival involved, I need closure.  Tie.  Steelers-Browns.  I guess I could talk about how the Steelers blew it with 7 plus remaining in the fourth quarter.  I could make jokes about Browns fans leaving the game early.  I could talk about how THEY didn’t resolve their big losing streak.  I could mention the fact that the football seems to have a defensive player magnet if Ben has some problems in the throw and catch or a deflection.  I could talk about Bell.  You are right, Rosie, sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose.  Well, the Steelers lost.  Be glad I am in a speed round tonight and won’t talk about this more.
  • While I was cleaning the house before Linds comes homes, I had on the ESPN Mike Greenberg-9/11 special. POWERFUL stuff, and the perfect guy to host it.  We all remember where we were that day.  Horrible day, with horrible losses, some close, some far, some family.  But, the way that ESPN brought back the sports element to the days and months after was classy and very well done.  Sure, there were many non-sports items that were more important.  But, sometimes simplicity and competition is what makes things special.  It makes us feel normal, and that is what we needed at that time.  If you don’t whether you were happy, mad, or against it when the Mets took the field after the disaster, then you would be lying.  But, tell me you didn’t get goosebumps when Piazza hit that dinger.  And maybe you thought it was cool when Messier somehow didn’t wear a cap out for the pre-game introductions.  But when that fireman skated over to him and put that helmet on his head on the ice with a picture of a fallen comrade, you were moved.  And Army-Navy was already a special game yearly, but that year it transcended sports and your emotions.  And, although George Bush was a crappy POTUS, the moment when he threw that perfect strike in the glove pre-game, right after there were rumors there might be another attack, and basically said to the terrorists…no…we will go on with our lives and get you back…was POWERFUL.  We will NOT go quietly into the night.  Sports is just a game.  But, sports helped us beyond all belief in one of the worst times for this country.  Know that.  Embrace it.

WEEK-FISH (current topics of interest in sports):

(one sentence per hook today)

  • I wish better college football matchups were on the schedule for the last Saturday before Linds returned, but I made it awesome.
  • I think I bet on 20 games, and made $40, but entertainment value was very high.
  • I thought Arizona would show its skill position weapons in this matchup, but we found out that Houston is just really, really good.
  • OU rolled, but the Rodney Anderson injury really takes away a three headed monster that we might have seen since Hoying, George, and Glenn.
  • I took Clemson minus the points, but sometimes you just have to appreciate a game for what it is…a great game, and A&M-Clemson was just that.
  • Shame though that the goal line touchback changed things late.
  • UGA went to one of the toughest places to play at South Carolina, and beat the snot out of them.
  • TCU covered on Friday away after being down 9-0, and they are very, very good.
  • Did we NOT expect Nathan Peterman to have problems in his first first game start?
  • The Serena-ump debate is interesting and historically worth noting, but it took all the glamour off a GREAT win for the up and comer, Osaka.
  • The Broncos are 1-0, and therefore this town is a little…normal…for the first time in a couple of years.
  • WHY don’t teams recognize that Drew Brees WILL make a run late?
  • WHY didn’t I put more thought into my losers pick (took TB)?
  • Same as above for Rivers and the Chargers, who almost made it interesting…
  • WHY are the Cardinals so bad already when Sam Bradford amazingly is not hurt yet?
  • WHY did Nebraska blow that game at home vs. Colorado and somehow put in jeopardy of going 9-4 or 8-5?
  • It is very hard to lose 77-0, Savannah State, but you have to understand Miami was pretty pissed.
  • Kirk Cousins wants (this is actually true) to trademark the saying “You Vike It.”
  • I took Alabama State and the 62 points against Auburn and won.
  • The Seminoles made my afternoon fun by being behind most of the day against Samford.
  • KU won for the first time in FORTY SIX road games, and that is an amazing stat for ANY Power 5 school.
  • I truly don’t understand this Bell-Steelers thing, and luckily even the paid media people are in the same boat…try finding an article that actually can break it down confidently.
  • THANK you, Arizona State, as you saved my day Saturday in betting…sometimes you just have to grind.
  • Stanford is not just Bryce Love and very, very good.
  • Hey…UVA beat the 5 point spread, right (20-16)?
  • Even the DirecTV FEED was bad in that UVA-Indiana game between two bad teams.
  • We can’t say much else about Aaron Rodgers and his magical comeback, but anyone else find it funny that we have as many stories about him as we do Brett Favre, and they both still only have one Super Bowl each?
  • Djokovic is back people, as a straight set win in a Grand Slam final is not easy any way you look at it.
  • The Sam Darnold recovery Monday night was beautiful, and remember…Brett Favre ALSO threw a first pass pick 6.
  • The guy who played air drums during Tom Sawyer at the Ravens game might have made my weekend.
  • Think about how crazy this is that Jordan Spieth, although always a threat at a Major and the best of our time arguably, will NOT make the field at the Tour Championship, arguably the fifth Major.
  • The Rams are very, very good.
  • I leave this segment telling you that new coaches in the NFL in the first week were 0-7.

THIS AND THAT (pop culture, Fillerbuster thoughts, and whatever else I feel like talking about):

  • Love my wife, but it was very peaceful and relaxing watching the entire OU game without her shouting at the TV like it was the devil.
  • I have the itch, made two pars this past weekend, and I have decided to get better at golf…or at least play frequently.
  • Lindsey’s family came to my house after being in Key West (getting their car keys) right DURING the Browns comeback against the Steelers (literally it was 21-14 and then they tied it), and a shout out to Lindsey’s sister for getting them out of the house during the Steelers meltdown.
  • I wish I could type as fast when I work as when I blog…I am a speed demon.
  • I played Tyreek Hill in fantasy and that was not fun.
  • I did the dishes ONCE in the two weeks while Linds was gone, and that one time was a half load that I did just because I wanted the house totally clean for her…paper plates and bowls and delivery…
  • I will never get Arby’s to go…I need constant access to their sauces in robust amounts.
  • Linds comes back to my soul patch/playoff goatee, and although she will be happy to see me, I expect backlash galore.
  • Frank Caliendo does SUCH a good Gruden.

CLOSING:

Oh…the theme, in case you missed it in my Billions notes.  HUGE build up scene with a possible meeting between main character Axe and this big time political guy named Foley.  Axel Foley meeting?  Are you kidding me?  When Eddie Murphy was funny.  Beverly Hills Cop?  Did they PLAN that?  Was it by chance?  Not sure, but it was the hardest I laughed this weekend (aside from delirious laughter when the Browns tied the score.

Who did Axel beat out for the theme?  Rosie, of course.  Sometimes, when you tie, you actually lose or win, etc…White Men Can’t Jump.  Good job, Axel.  White Men Can’t Jump usually wins all theme battles.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed.  Will I blog again?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.  And feed your family.  Feed yourself.  But, whatever you do, make sure you Feed The Wolf.

Oh, and I logged in at 43 minutes door to door.

Greg, sorry if I made any mistakes this time (called me out for in my throw it back, I said Julius Randle instead of Joseph Randle).  I typed this whole thing in 43 freaking minutes, bro.

PICS:
