Catch Of The Day

New Mailbag coming soon, Bill?

HOOK:

“Rivalry.”

We could go one by one through all rivalries and discover some contenders.  We can find older ones too.  We can find ones with more fun history.  But, in the end, it doesn’t matter how you slice it, Duke-UNC is somewhere near the top (my personal vote is Bama-Auburn football but that is not today!).  Tonight, two teams battle again who form a rivalry that probably looms above all others for three reasons in my opinion.

  1. The two teams are consistently near the top echelon of their sport, so there are frequent ranked battles.
  2. A different important seed, Final Four appearance, or sometimes a championship comes into play when they get on the court.
  3. IF one team is a little down, they frequently make it a game or frequently WIN.

Enjoy, folks.  Not sure if we have to tolerate Dicky V talking about how great Duke is or not, but he still infuses energy into the game, which doesn’t need it anyway.

LINE:

“Early.”

Concussions.  Walking up steps.  Hearing the old guys talk.  Technology and medicine.  Sure, Jerod Mayo might have retired anyway due to his lack of ability to stay on the field.  But, I have a feeling at his age and DUE to this day and age, there was no question about it.  In a career hindered by injuries, you might as well take the healthy post football life.  Good luck, Jerod.

SINKER:

“Impaled.”

Montee Ball and Mack Crowder were contenders for sinker of the day, but I am pretty sure that not many basketball players worry about being IMPALED when going out on the court.  She is fine, so jokes are allowed, but sounds HORRIBLE.  http://espn.go.com/moresports/story/_/id/14792125/wisconsin-high-school-basketball-player-14-pierced-piece-wood-floor

THE RIVER:

-So Colt McCoy is going to bed tonight thinking “I might be a starter still.”  That is crazy.  But, with contractual negotiations stopped with him and the team, and RGIII assumed to be let go on March 9, who KNOWS?

-Finally, a shout out to my guy, Bill Simmons.  I LOVE his stuff and assume some of my style and ideas have come from his writings, and SO glad he will have another content site (hopefully with a mailbag).  The Ringer will be awesome.  Bill IS funny as hell, and so are all the Grantland writers he is bringing over.

No prizes, Marty/ Rudy.

That’s it.  Will I blog tomorrow?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.  Peace.
