FILLERBUSTER’S ELEVEN

BACKGROUND:  This started as a long-winded numbered blog.  It transformed into an organized long-winded category blog.  Now, it is a quick-hitter to ease your pain.  I lack time.  So, the preparation of the blog actually made me procrastinate from writing the thing.  Let’s see who makes the cut.  Barely edited as usual unfortunately, so please excuse any mistakes during my stream of consciousness.  I feel the need…the need for speed.  Let’s turn and burn.

SETTING: I wrote this all while my wife was getting her hair done on the Saturday before the big game.  And while watching the IU-Ohio State hoops game mostly.  Just an all at once release of what was on my mind.  Probably less edited than usual.  The focus will be slightly more on “the big game,” so I will be speeding through other sports and my personal stuff.  But, it HAS been a while since I covered all, so cut me a break.  Not even organizing my Vegas pics for you.  Let’s go… (I really DIDN’T edit this.  Ran out of gas.)

  1. EVERGREEN 1:  THE BIG GAME.  Depending on the day in the last two weeks, I would be on either side of the fence several times.  I have debated who I am rooting for, I have broken down the offenses and defenses and coaches, and I have woken up daily with uncertainty.  Well, I have made my final decision.  I did a 180 today when I awoke.  I had been on the Niners side the last few days.  Aside from X’s and O’s, I had simply learned that the Niners went 13-3, with all three losses coming in the final MINUTE.  They weren’t flashy.  They were simply consistent and solid on both sides of the ball.  They have the Shanahan game planning on the sidelines.  They had the best rushing attack in their conference.  The defense was one of the best in the league.  Jimmy G. just does what is needed to get it done.  The Chiefs offense is stellar, but this would be the one to stop them.  I admired the way that Kyle Shanahna had taken his dad’s brilliant offense and widened it, if you will.  He altered it to what was needed for his team.  Then, I thought about it some more.  Defenses WILL catch up with offenses, and then more chess moves will be made, but I don’t think that is THIS year.  I think the Chiefs will be similar to the Rams back in the day, the Greatest Show on Turf.  Defenses will adjust, but this second run by the Chiefs still looks like they are toying with teams.  They were an offsides call last year away from the Super Bowl, if you recall.  The Texans and Titans found out that there is an “On” switch that is too tough to figure out.  The skills positions are too fast.  The lines are solid on both offense and defense.  The overall defense does JUST enough to let the other factor come into play.  Mahomes.  He is NOT figured out yet, and I don’t think these two weeks are enough.  I think everyone needs a couple drinks on a beach in Mexico during the offseason to let ideas marinate how to stop this kid.  He is a smart, running QB with a GUN as his arm, who is never out of a play.  Even great defenses can’t cover all receivers for the whole time that Mahomes can avoid sacks.  It is too much to ask.  Maybe next year, folks.  And that TD run he had near the end of the first half in the AFC Championship showed again he has HEART too.  Skills, arm strength, speed, smarts, AND heart?  Too much.  This will be a fun game though.  The 49ers led their conference in rushing, and the Chiefs led their conference in passing.  This is the first time two TE’s with 1000 receiving yards match up.  They are both dangerous in their own ways.  Then, you have Andy Reid.  Guy reinvents himself, gets a QB to have some more fun with, and has unlimited tricks up his sleeve it would seem.  And when it comes down to “rooting” for someone, don’t we kind of want to root for him?  Shanahan will have more time to do this.  Reid is on the other side of HIS career.  He is sixth all-time in wins, and all five guys above him have a title.  Sure, the Chiefs are the favorite by a point or two.  Maybe that is boring.  Sure, the Niners have proved us wrong ALL year, but I am willing to go against them one more time in The Big Game.  The Chiefs have too much firepower, and their defense will do just enough.  Plus, My wife’s brother and I have a My Homes joke with this guy since his college days, and my wife will be watching game with me and it would be better if we were aligned. I don’t want her rooting against my money/ our money. Mahomes will win MVP, and the final score will be 30-23.  And, if I am wrong, then the Niners get me for the 10th time this year, it seems.  I just can’t learn.  Enjoy the game, everyone.
  2. EVERGREEN 2:  ELI MANNING.  Eli Manning retired, and his legacy is complicated, yet definitive.  Not only did he win two Super Bowls, but he took down the mighty Pats BOTH times.  Once, he stopped them from going undefeated.  His overall record will always be par, his HOF acceptance in a few years will be debated strongly on both sides, but he leaves a winner.  He never had incredible talent around him, so no one could ever say he was wasting talent.  He just simply got hot when it counted in certain years.  He was always in the shadow of his brother and father early on, but the titles rang clear and loud.  Let’s also not forget he was Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2016, so a good guy too.  He still ends up with 57k in yardage, and places in the top ten all time in yards and touchdowns.  He also leaves the game with the third longest starting streak of all time, so he was durable too.  And let’s also not forget he was MVP of both of those Super Bowl wins, so he saddled up in the biggest moments.  We will miss you, Elisha Nelson Manning (that is really his name).  You were not the flashiest QB during the regular seasons, but in 2007 and 2011, you laid all of your cards on the table against the best and won.  Onward and upward, sir.
  3. NFL:  Can someone make me a real-time flow chart for Antonio Brown?  I love flow charts, and I honestly can’t keep track of whether he is mad, sad, happy, tweeting, arrested, assaulting, working out, locked in his house, apologizing, etc.  I feel like life would have been funnier this week if AB was IN the car with Kareem Hunt when HE got busted.  Too much to ask for though.  Two important questions.  Did you watch the NFL Pro Bowl?  If you didn’t, when did you even know who “won?”  I just now looked, five days after.  Joejuan Williams doesn’t play a lot for the Patriots, but at least his drug bust arrest in Tennessee gives us a little ammo the next time our Pats fan friend starts talking about the Patriot Way.  Joejuan had FIVE tackles all year, so don’t take the joke TOO far.  Bill O’ Brien will not only be coach, but also GM of the Texans, as being a GM also has nothing to do with your team blowing a 24-point lead in the first quarter.  Thinking about what Tom Brady does is fun and entertaining, but A) if he leaves, it is the Chargers or Colts in my opinion and B) The Fillerbuster AND Joe Montana both are telling him to stay and…C) stop leaving weird IG posts, Dr. Crocs. RIP, Chris Doleman.  You were a FORCE when you played, and we will miss you as a player and person. Deion Sanders says the HOF is getting watered down.  I said so the moment that Curtis Martin got in years ago.  But, you probably shouldn’t have said it RIGHT after this class was announced…choose a time in between so you don’t look like you are picking on those new guys.  Bottom line.  It is.  In ALL sports, to be honest.  They will be selecting guys to the HOF long after we are gone, so no rush, choose less players, and be selective.  Drew Brees is debating retirement.  Of course he is.  As a football fan, I just say that he still made the playoffs, he still was elite, and he should stick around one more year with THOSE weapons.  Hill and Bridgewater would be more than happy to wait one more year and learn from the best, I assume.
  4. COLLEGE BASKETBALL:  I would like to tell you something, Silvio De Sousa.  When you allegedly took money to attend college at Kansas, and then were still allowed to eventually play, you probably shouldn’t be picking up chairs in college basketball brawls.  Just a heads up.  Or maybe you and Illinois player Alan Griffin can go out and party, since he steps on players during games.  UNC leads all teams with FOUR McDonald’s All-Americans in the annual high school game.  Their season thus far means that ALL of those kids might be starters next year for all we know.  Kids go to big time schools all the time with a bunch of other five-star recruits and don’t get playing time.  Somehow, UNC has a loophole for next year at least.  I bet you Kahlil Whitney wishes he would have gone to UNC, since he is transferring from UK most likely because of a LACK of playing time.  Ohio State losing at home to Minnesota (a bad road team) continues the story of weird upsets.  And CU lost to UCLA as a five-point favorite.  Then, Oregon State beats consistent Stanford AT Stanford.  Not saying I TOTALLY believed it, but I thought that UVA would show, at home, who they COULD be against a better, deeper, more offensive FSU team.  It wasn’t pretty, but that was a big win against a contender.  Glad they aren’t letting ALL teams walk over them after their title run.  Damn you, Kyle Guy, for leaving.  What is WRONG with Auburn?  And if you think Dayton is a flash in the pan early or midseason, I will just tell you this.  They have all of the components to make a run, and the best player in the nation.  Put it in your head now.  Have Dayton go far in your bracket.  Coach K.  Your fans aren’t ALWAYS mean.  Capel was one of you.  Creighton just beat Nova AT Nova, and Xavier just crushed Seton Hall AT Seton Hall, as this crazy year of hoops continues.
  5. NBA:  Dwight Howard will be in the dunk contest, and maybe Deion Sanders should talk about how the dunk contest is watered down now.  I was really sad to hear about Delonte West being spotted in Texas streets homeless.  Hope he gets some help.  Decent read on the NBA at the midpoint.  https://www.si.com/nba/2020/01/22/nba-midseason-superlatives-giannis-antetokounmpo-luka-doncic  Zion Williamson is averaging 18/8 thus far with a 24 PER.  And he is just getting warmed up folks.  If he can keep healthy knees, we are going to see special things from the lad.  Very cool for the South Carolina born kid to exchange jerseys last night with the #2 pick, and his friend, Ja Morant.  I am a Luka Doncic fan, as I have told you countless times.  Shame he is out for a few weeks with an injury, and even sadder that he will miss the ASG festivities.  But, as a taste of what that team is becoming, they scored 78 points…in a half…last week.  And although it is a plug in for an injury, I am a big Cauley-Stein fan, so him added to the mix will solidify that frontcourt.  Of course, Giannis scored 30 points in the NBA’s first game in Paris.  Then, something odd happened LAST night.  I stared at the 13 point spread in the Nuggets-Bucks game for a few minutes.  Didn’t pull the trigger, even though I found out my buddy was at the game.  Then, the depleted Nuggets not only covered the spread, but BEAT the Bucks.  Sometimes a stat is thrown my way that I can’t believe I didn’t know.  Did YOU know that the triple double by Kawhi Leonard last week was his FIRST?  Never would have guessed.  The first thing I thought of when I heard that Allen Iverson had $500k in jewelry stolen from him (later recovered) was “I thought he was broke??”  Sell that shit, man.  Yes, one of the games was against the emotional Lakers on Kobe night, but Damian Lillard’s stats in the last few weeks are sort of ridiculous.  He is averaging, in the last ten games, 39.1 points in less than 39 minutes on the floor.  51% shooting, and 47% from deep.  That is sick.  With HIS first triple double in the mix. I think I missed WHY ESPN ran a cover article on Andre Drummond, but maybe you can read it and tell me about it.  Victor Oladipo is back, and hoops fans from ANY city are happy.  He makes the game better.  Scoring 27 points PER game is very, very hard in the NBA.  You are a special player to be able to do it.  Devin Booker AND Bradley Beal both do this nightly, and still were snubbed from even the RESERVES of the ASG.  Very confusing process that I won’t even try to understand.  As usual, your best hoops read of the week.   https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28585379/eleven-nba-things-right-now  The week of Kobe tributes was nonstop and AWESOME.  I already wrote about him, but hearing about jersey number switches, speeches, champion tennis players honor him, late night host tributes, Hayward final game defense vs. Kobe transparency (he WAS trying), fans respects, hometown Philly ceremonies,  All-Star Game plans, LeBron tattoos, and more just made my week and never got old.  Wasn’t it also weird this all went down right after LeBron passed Kobe on the scoring list?  And right after Kobe broke barriers by telling us the players that he thought could play in the NBA?  Happy trails, Kobe.  You will be missed.
  6. TENNIS: The women’s side of the Aussie draw lost much of its glamour near the end of its bracket, but don’t discount the young talent.  Venus lost.  Sharapova lost.  Serena lost.   Gauff beat Osaka to continue her story that will just get better.  And Sofia Kenin showed that SHE might be America’s best hope as Serena’s age will continue to catch up with her.  Kenin might be a big name soon, if Gauff doesn’t make her run first.  The men’s side?  Nick Kyrgios imitated Nadal’s pre-serve ritual in a match NOT against Nadal and it was awesome.  Then, Nick ended up playing Nadal and lost respectfully.  Kyrgios can be frustrating and sometimes abrasive, but there is little question he will get over the hump once these all-timers step aside.  Federer showed he has lots of skills AND heart in the tank by beating Millman in five grueling sets.  Then, he got smoked by Djokovic, but most people are getting smoked by Djokovic these days.  Nadal lost, but we all know that the Nadal Open is next, so no need to worry.  Dominic Thiem has made a nice run, and will try and get his first Slam tonight.  Djokovic will go for his 17th, which would put him 3 behind Federer and 2 behind Nadal.  He better take advantage of a final NOT playing those two.  Another great show of talent from the first Slam of the season, during a very hard time for the region.
  7. MISCELLANEOUS: Tiger is currently tied for 9th at the time of this writing.  I think he would be happy with any finish in red figures.  We all know he doesn’t care about anything until Augusta.  I looked at the college baseball rankings this week.  So, UVA, literally had a three-year run of excellence, and they dropped off the radar that fast.  Not even ranked these days.  Anywhere.  Weird run.  Women’s basketball player Maya Moore will sit out a SECOND straight year.  She is sitting because of a tribute to a Missouri inmate she believes is innocent.  She is sitting out during her prime for this reason.  That is saying something.  She won four titles and then is doing this.  Props.  In case you were curious for future blogs, NO, I will not be partaking in any viewing of the XFL games, nor will I be betting on them, which was just legalized in NJ (6th state to do so).  I might watch 20 minutes of a game to logically speak about it.  After that?  I am done with it.
  8. THIS AND THAT:  Nickelback is on tour, but are they aware they have become kind of a cult joke?  In case you were curious, after I was told that airplane seats might be thinner or wider in certain parts, it is the front seats that get slightly slimmer towards the cockpit.  At least, that is what the flight attendant told me on my last Southwest flight…because I asked.  I am glad the Northwest held the stereotype of rain all three days I was up there.  I read that Influenza is consistently more dangerous than this more highly publicized Coronavirus, but that doesn’t stop me from reading articles on the latter.  Probably smart that they are pulling the Mr. Peanut ads where he dies in a plane crash.  GM and Honda are releasing self-driving cars without steering wheels or pedals, and not sure I dig that concept of NO control.  ON that note, UPS is developing self-driving vans for deliveries.  No word on any robots to run the package from van to porch.  Accor hotels is now eliminating their travel sized toiletries, and all of this environment crap is really making it harder for me to stock up my air bnb.  The Tiktok Outlet Challenge sounds very unsafe, even though I have no idea what it is.  Just in case movie makers were lacking ideas, scientists have discovered 4 new shark species, and they all have legs.  The Bachelor contestant who cheated at fantasy football did NOT get her million dollars, if you care.  I saw a Lamborghini SUV in Vegas, and I didn’t know they made those.  Adam Driver was very good on SNL, although my focus was more on Halsey.  It is the year 2020, and is Mad Dog doing anything special?  I remember those days.  Billi Eilish won a bunch of well-deserved awards at the Grammy’s.  She has a different niche, and I commend her for that, even if I am confused how an 18 year old is singing about all this dirty stuff.  By the way, what is the difference between a “song” and “record” if there is another category with “album” in it?  I have Coronavirus written four times on my blog ideas list, in case you don’t think I thought about it a lot.  I think I would rather die by those monster killer bees.  That would definitely suck being on that cruise ship though.  Midwestern Saloon, as you know from reading this, is our new favorite place.  Well, we just found out it is closing.  Last day is Super Bowl Sunday.  Got an offer they couldn’t refuse.  Sad.  I am going to brunch there tomorrow to get either my last breakfast mac and cheese or grilled cheese benedict from there…ever.  Why does every country music place still include the line dances like Electric Slide?  I am not sure of the link.  Seven is still such a good movie in my opinion.  What’s in the BOX?  People who play video blackjack on the way HOME from Vegas have a problem they are not sharing with friends.  I didn’t know that Brad Pitt was the first choice for The Matrix.  I feel like there is a parallel between the coolness factor of Taylor Swift and Will Smith, but I just can’t finish the thought on that.  The Wayback Bar on Tennyson is a cool place.  We went for the first time.  If you need to hit the bathroom, it is way…in the back.  In you need to travel south of the border, stay in the resort.  Mexico logged, for 2019, its highest murder rate since records were kept.  And if you thought that tapeworms were not evolving, a man had a headache this week, and he ended up having a tapeworm…in his skull.  When Denver is all over the news for a blizzard in the winter, do they also pass along the news that this weekend is all 70 degrees and sunny?
  9. THE FILLERBUSTER: If a tip falls anywhere NEAR $20 by percentage, I continue to do the 2020 challenge.  Lots of pictures, but I still enjoy the Friday USA Today when I travel, as they have to cram enough graphs and shallow articles to last you until Monday.  In case you thought that having lists on everything weren’t enough in my personal Google Doc, I have now started a ranking list for airports, hotels, and restaurants everywhere and anywhere.  It has been fun watching my wife slowly catch up on Billions, one of my favorite shows ever.  I won some cash in Vegas playing blackjack, and remember my personal rules for making money.  Unless you can count cards or do plus/minus, you are shooting yourself in the foot if you aren’t jumping ALL over splits and doubles that mathematically make sense.  That is what the dealer CAN’T do.  Otherwise, you are just playing THEIR game.  Stagger your bets too.  I went to a full doctor’s appointment in the morning and STILL was the fifth person to arrive to work on the sale floor.  I had to write the Kobe article earlier this week, but man, it got me behind on all of this other crap.  Cadence, dammit.  We set up our spontaneous Valentines Day plans together, and wife and I are doing Truffle Table in Denver, heading Estes Park to show shoe (she found a killer deal that involves fondue), couples massage, and a night on Pearl Street in Boulder (we figured out we know no one there and haven’t been there for YEARS).  How do neither of us know anyone in a popular town 40 minutes away?  I made fun of Taylor Swift at work in a conversation with a buddy, and learned VERY quickly that people either love her or hate her, and it becomes a very dicey conversation topic.  My new food plan at work is that I won’t “actively seek out” leftover food.  Baby steps.  I went to the Main Event for a friend’s bday thing, and realized there IS something that is EXACTLY like a Dave & Busters.  Someone got a hold of my credit card # and oddly went to Dave & Busters and Papa Johns as their choice of activities.  My wife tells me that wearing the ankle UVA socks she got me for Christmas with cargo shorts is tacky, but that might be my new thing…well, when I can’t wear sandals.  The lights on-off debate at work is getting even more heated.  I am in the light-off segment, and I DO lose my mind when they do it before 8am.   Wife made me pumpkin mac and cheese and it was surprisingly delicious, even without full on cheese. When I bowl, I land comfortably in the 120-180 zone.  Never more, never less.  Bowled two games two weeks ago.  137, 142.  A couple on the plane back from Vegas was playing a puzzle game and passing it back and forth.  Linds and I could try that, I guess, but considering she would SMOKE me at any puzzle game, it would be useless.  My wife listens to Ben Platt quite a lot recently.  When I asked whether that was her new dude crush, I think I was kind of happy to hear that Ben is gay.  Every time my wife wakes up and says her head hurts, I start singing the Jimmy Buffet song.  My head hurts, my feet stink, and I don’t love Jesus.  Etc. I am very embarrassed that I just started tipping room cleaners (leaving a buck or two per night) a couple of years ago.  Not a habit.   I feel like I didn’t know about radio stations not being able to say the words “Super Bowl” or “Super Sunday” because of rights, but wouldn’t I have noticed that before this year?  I am confusing myself.  I HAD to know that.  I think.  Right?  I am a sports guy.  How did I miss that?  Skipping some stuff to keep this moving…

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed.  Remember two things.  First, feed yourself, feed your family, but always, always remember to…feed the wolf.  Second,  if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.  Will I blog again?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.  As one shepherd said to the other shepherd, let’s get the flock out of here.

10.  VEGAS (simply for my travel journal I have kept for the last four years, and copied and pasted)

  • Mirage was again a nice hotel to stay at, but I need to note there is no walk-in shower in their normal rooms.
  • Doing the mobile check-in is VERY nice
  • We arrived a night after everyone, but you should ALWAYS squeeze in a Fremont night if you can.
  • Pacific time sucks, and I kept missing the beginning of games in late afternoon.
  • Fuel Bar has 2 for 1 coupons, flair bartending, is in the very corner of the outside strip mall in front of Bally’s, and you should ALWAYS try and sneak an hour over there.
  • We didn’t do the High Roller, but always the best worst idea you can do.
  • On the walk back from Fuel Bar, it is always fun to stop in (always forget the names of them) the stage that has the DJ and the karaoke bar to the left of that.
  • The karaoke bar sometimes has dueling piano players, and I learned (and did) last trip they DO allow people on stage to play for a small fee.
  • I didn’t gamble the entire first night.  Weird.
  • On Saturday morning, we met up with Dick and Che, Lindsey’s family members who live in Vegas.  We drove about 30 minutes to a place called Lake Las Vegas, a cool little Oasis in the desert with some NICE houses and great lake atmosphere.  I would recommend eating at Le Café Du Lac if you go there.  Nice walk around area also.
  • Lindsey took a nap, I went to the pool and hot tub, which were nice.  Shuts down at 4pm though in the winter.  Make sure to adjust your schedule.
  • Round 1 of gambling.  Won a few hundred.  Should have been more.  I ALWAYS ask (and you should too) if the table doesn’t mind you joining.  Etiquette.  You don’t want to ruin present people’s run.  Anyway, I asked an incoming lady to NOT join for 2-3 hands, she did, and the table went south.  I got out luckily before it turned into shambles.  Hate that.
  • The sports book at Mirage is really nice, and I might be back for that in my next trip in March.  Noted.  But, I have Bovada, so I didn’t really need it this trip.
  • I am pretty sure I could name most looping songs at a casino at this point in my life.  Phil Collins might be one of the captains of the team.
  • California Kitchen for dinner.  Delicious and quick.
  • There is a cool little tram from Mirage to TI if you ever need faster transit.
  • Ladies party in room, I play cards and win some more.
  • I need to quit the slots.  The whole trip was winning more on blackjack, and losing less quickly on slots.
  • At this point, my wife (not a big gambler), is 2 for 2 on black on roulette tables.
  • Hit up Gilley’s.  I didn’t get out on dance floor for two-step, but did for Electric Slide.  When we tried to country dance, I accidentally hit wife in face.
  • So, do all the people with cowboy hats in Gilley’s WEAR the hats while flying, or have some secret way of packing them in suitcase?
  • We did a club night at Chateau at Paris.  Outdoor, way up high, view of Bellagio and fountains, and I felt pretty damn cool for an hour or two.  And the lacrosse team we were there with had an allotment, so the night was free.  Thanks, guys.
  • Fountains were done when we left to walk The Strip. Sad.
  • We rode in a self-driving Uber that had two drivers to explain what is going on.
  • WE did Sterling Brunch the next day, always a highlight.  It is expensive, but worth it.  It is in Bally’s, and tough to get a reservation.  If you don’t have a reservation, be the first 14 people to arrive and you will be at the bar.  We had brunch with Brooke and Lynn, friends from Denver, and it was stellar.  Caviar, lobster ravioli, anything you want.
  • Mystere was a highlight.  It is the original Cirque show, and I didn’t realize it would be so good.  Very raw, not overly produced, and the athletes and dancers are top flight.  I rank it #3 all time for me behind Absinthe and Love.
  • Did we go back to Cali Kitchen?  Yes.
  • The MSG Sphere and Raiders stadium, along with the new Resorts World, are all coming along nicely.  The RW is going to be the most expensive casino built, topping Cosmo.
  • Our friends saw Carrot Top eating at a food court, so his gigs might not be paying the best.
  • Canadian Bacon.  Inside joke.
  • We stayed at the place where Boys II Men was, and didn’t catch them.   But, our rationale was that we saw them for free at Taste of Colorado just a couple of years ago.
  • Earlier night, after winning some cash at cards, as it was a long day, and woke up and headed back to Denver.
  • Sorry.  Not enough time to organize the Vegas pics.  Gotta go do stuff.
