Day 1 Thoughts…

No, I worked and couldn’t WATCH most of it, but still booked it home to catch the last 5-6 holes.  My thoughts on the leaderboard of Day 1 at Whistling Straits.

-The people who made if through the afternoon and are close to par are hoping for similar weather tomorrow I bet.  When you look on the leaderboard midday and EVERYONE is finished, then you know the weather is toying with people.

-And, on that note, GREAT round, David Lingmerth (afternoon group actually).  This guy has the ability to hang around, people.  Two time All-American, turned pro in 2010, won twice (should have been a third but Tiger got him).

-Dustin Johnson got out to his fourth quick start in a Major.  Let’s see how the other three days turn out.  He is -20 in the opening round of Majors this season.  He is -7 on Day 2, PLUS 4 on moving day, and even on the final day.  More to come.

-We were wondering about his ankle.  A -1 round in a weather affected afternoon group has to make the field a little uneasy of Rory McIlroy.

-There are some big names at even right now.

-Speaking of those guys, I only watched the last 5 holes and that is one crazy even par Phil Mickelson just pulled out.

-Glance at the score and you see +1.  Glance at his scorecard, and you know Rickie Fowler played fine except for one MONSTER blow up.

-I noticed that Kuchar, Day, and Holmes are lurking at -4…basically on the short list of best players without a Major.

-Good job to Charles Howell III, as his -2 today gave me flashbacks of when he was “the next coming of a great player.”  What ever happened to you?

-Don’t sleep on his year or his OK -2.  Martin Kaymer won the last time a Major was at this course.

-I still firmly believe Paul Casey is taking one of these Majors down and soon.  His -2 puts him in a nice spot for Day 2.

-Tiger…”hit it great but didn’t make anything,” F-Bombs, and a +3…sounds about right.

-I think Jimmy Walker does well at tournaments when I am out of town and not watching golf.

-I thought Camilo would have a better Day 1 showing as he played this course pretty well in 2010. +3?

-Zach Johnson must still be thinking about the British Open.  I mean that in jest.  That wasn’t his first Major.  LOCK up, man.  +3?

-Davis Love III had a +7 today and I believe aged the fastest of any good golfer ever.

-I looked at consistent Adam Scott’s +4 and said “must have had a crazy round.”  I had NOOO idea.  I checked out his scorecard.  Dude had only SEVEN pars.  Everything else was one way or the other.

That’s it for today.  Talk to you tomorrow.  Peace.
